Top Ten Bed Bug Tips

1.   Make sure you really have bed bugs, not fleas or ticks or other insects

2.   Don’t panic! Eliminating bed bugs is difficult, but it’s not impossible. Don’t throw out all of your things because most of them can be treated and saved. Throwing stuff out is expensive, may spread the bed bugs and could cause more stress.

3.   Think through your treatment options — Don’t immediately reach for the spray can Bedbugs are hard to get rid of. There are a lot of products on the shelf at your local hardware store but be aware that they can be harmful to you and your family. It is always best to hire a professional.

4.   Reduce the number of hiding places — Clean up the clutter A cluttered home provides more places for bed bugs to hide and makes locating and treating them harder.

5.   Regularly wash and heat-dry your bed sheets, blankets, bedspreads and any clothing that touches the floor. This reduces the number of bed bugs. Bed bugs and their eggs can hide in laundry containers/hampers, so clean them when you do the laundry.

6.   Don’t rely on do-it-yourself freezing as a reliable method for bed bug control. While freezing can kill bed bugs, temperatures must remain very low for a long time. Home freezers are usually not cold enough to kill bed bugs. Putting things outside in freezing temperatures can kill bed bugs, but it can take several days when the temperature is 0° F and almost a week when the temperature is 20° F.

7.   Use heat to kill bed bugs, but be very careful. Raising the indoor temperature with the thermostat or space heaters won’t do the job. Special equipment and very high temperatures are necessary for successful heat treatment. Black plastic bags in the sun might work to kill bed bugs in luggage or small items, if the contents become hot enough (about 110°F for at least 3 hours).

8.   Don’t pass your bed bugs on to others. Bed bugs are good hitchhikers. If you throw out a mattress or furniture that has bed bugs in it, you should slash or in some way destroy it so that no one else takes it and gets bed bugs.

9.   Reduce the number of bed bugs to reduce bites. Thorough vacuuming can get rid of some of your bed bugs. Carefully vacuum rugs, floors, upholstered furniture, bed frames, under beds, around bed legs, and all cracks and crevices around the room. Change the bag after each use so the bed bugs can’t escape. Place the used bag in a tightly sealed plastic bag and in an outside garbage bin.

10. Turn to the professionals. Hiring an experienced, responsible pest control professional can increase your chance of success in getting rid of bed bugs. If you hire an expert, be sure it’s a company with a good reputation. The Bed Bugs Stop Here are fully trained in bed bug removal. Call today to set up your appointment.

Carpenter Ants Wreaking Havoc on Long Island Homes

Just when you thought the housing crisis couldn’t get worse, carpenter ants and multiple ant species are wreaking summertime havoc on local Long Island homes. Just like us, carpenter ants need homes too, and chances are they’ve picked yours to terrorize.

Carpenter ants get their name because they build their nests in wood. Long Island homes are at risk because carpenter ants nest where they can find water and damp wood. Their first target area is outside wood such as tree stumps, firewood, or the plants around your house. If the outside wood is not enough to sustain their colony, carpenter ants start to build nests inside the home, usually entering through wet, damaged wood. Because there is plenty of moldy, damp wood in Long Island, carpenter ants swarm the area.

During Summer, carpenter ants are focused on finding food and expanding their colony. If they find the perfect conditions at the right Long Island home or office, they will settle anywhere in the building. In most cases, carpenter ants build nests near sinks, dishwashers, roofs, attics, chimneys, electrical outlet boxes, hollow doors, or leaky vent pipes. Literally overnight, several hundred to a thousand ants can set up a satellite colony, and that does not bode well for your Long Island property.

So what’s a homeowner to do to protect against a carpenter ant invasion? To start, look for existing signs of a carpenter ant invasion. If you notice small, chewed up piles of wood shavings or sawdust, that could be a sign of carpenter ants. If you notice 5 or more ants per day in your Long Island property, chances are they have an indoor nest. If you see swarms of winged ants buzzing around your gutters and siding, it is a sure bet that your house or office has been invaded.

Unfortunately, combating carpenter ants is tough because there are 9 types of carpenter ants in the U.S., and store-bought ant poison may not work against the colony. While a single carpenter ant might deliver poison to the nest, there is generally not enough transfer throughout the colony to do any real damage. The only way to eliminate an interior nest is to first find it. Hiring professional exterminators for carpenter ant inspection of your Long Island property is the only way to stop the carpenter ant onslaught.

Fortunately, the experts at The Bug Stops Here know exactly where to uncover the interior nest and eliminate the carpenter ants from your property. The Bug Stops Here | 25 Years In Pest Control & Giving Back

25 Years of Solving Problems & Giving Back

Steve Free Celebrates His Silver Anniversary in Pest Control with The Bug Stops Here

Steve Free started with nothing but always had something. Growing up in Brooklyn in the ‘60s, with almost no education and little to no opportunities, he must have always had his drive, his determination and his will to succeed, because he has made a huge success of his life.

25 years ago he met a man named Walter Schroeder who started him on the right path. Schroeder became his mentor, his friend and his honorary uncle. “Uncle Walter we call him,” relates Free. “I was this punk kid from Brooklyn with no education and he got me into this class that the government was sponsoring, and he got me my education.” The class was on extermination and after Free completed the 8-week course, Walter had him (and 10 other graduates) placed in several different exterminating companies. Free was on his way. ”I took what he taught me and ran with it and I am so grateful. He gave me a trade, a future. I have tried to repay this: I’ve tried to be like Uncle Walter and give kids what he gave me.”

Having successfully owned, run and even more importantly, enjoyed his life with The Bug Stops Here Inc. for the last 17 years, (with 8 earlier years in the bug biz) Free is truly thankful for all that he has. Not only does he run his booming bug business, but he travels all over the island, speaking for free to various chambers of commerce, rotaries and local branches of the Kiwanis club, educating the public about the ever-growing problems of disease and difficulties from pests. For Free, it’s not about money; it’s about helping people and teaching them how to protect themselves.

A huge problem that has recently surfaced, one that hadn’t affected this country in 50-plus years, is the recent and ever-growing problem with bedbugs. In the last three years, this epidemic has grown by a whopping, frightening 500 percent. So what can people do? Go to a seminar given by Free and learn how we can all take part in preventing this terrible problem from escalating.

When educating the public, he offers words of warning and caution: Watch what you bring home when you go on vacation and be careful about who you have staying with you. In this carefree and careless age of flying everywhere and anywhere at a moment’s notice, bedbugs have been brought in record numbers to this country and Free wants to put an end to this. “If I can stop someone from spreading disease, I’m happy.”

Steve Free gets happy from just helping people in general.  So often he visits a home where a woman is hysterical, sobbing in fright from the bugs that have invaded her home. Free feels it is his job to not only clear her home of bugs, but to ease her mind. And that is the part that he thrives on. “When I get to a house and see a woman crying and I can help, I’m happy. When she’s been bitten by fleas, or termites are destroying the house, I come in and I’m like Mighty Mouse,” says Free.

Saving the day has gotten him where he is today. “It’s not about the money, I truly love my customers. I remember that if not for them, I ‘d have nothing. Do my customers need me on Christmas Day at 11 o’clock at night? I’ll be there-Terminix won’t, Orkin won’t. I come when they want me to come.”

The Bug Stops Here serves over 2000 residential customers each month, but is looking to expand its horizons and now has clients on all ends of the commercial spectrum, from restaurants to warehouses, from townhouses to condos.

Free built The Bug Stops Here, as he puts it, on “integrity and a handshake” and he continues to practice that integrity in all aspects of his business and his life. Happily married for 23 years and the doting father of an 8-year-old boy, Free is right where he wants to be, successful in business and successful in life. And for Free, the journey is everything. “I still love what I do and that’s important. I’m very grateful to my customers who have stuck by me all these years. I’m blessed.”

Back to school - Bed Bugs are just one more thing to worry about

Every year we look forward to our kids going back to school. But with starting school again, every year parents across the world have 1 fear in their heads, “lice” no matter how we try to keep them out of our kids hair there is a chance they will come home with them. It is unavoidable. Kids hang their coats and hats next to other kids and the next thing you know you are getting a notice home from the teacher stating that there has been a report of lice in the class.

This year is a little different. With the break of another bug that is out there you now have to worry more. This one you most likely get a notice home about. The only way you will know is from bite marks on your body. What are we talking about? You guessed it, BEDBUGS.

Bedbugs are being reported more and more every day. This is a wide spread issue and now with school started it will become worse. Bedbugs move from one kids clothes to another. Before you know it they are in your home.

Bed Bugs In New York City, Queens and Long Island are getting out of control. The Bed Bugs Stop Here has been serving the New York City, Queens and Long Island area for over 20 years. The Bed Bugs Stop Here takes the Bed Bug issues seriously and is known for the great rates and the method used to fight the Bed Bugs.

Bed Bugs has always been a problem but recently the number of cases has increased significantly and it’s time for the pest control industry to take a stand and combat the issue and control the problem.

Steve Free is disgusted with how many people combat bed bug problems on a daily basis. The problem is that people can’t afford to hire many of the pest control companies because they are charging outrageous fees and they are trying to do it themselves and that doesn’t work. A professional should be hired.

Insect Repellent: Natural or Deet?

The usage of organic insect repellent is appearing to be a real and considerable substitute for the much more conventional chemical-based solutions such as DEET. This sort of organic repellent is kind of arguable, as is their treatment by a few health systems around the world. In European countries, for instance, these products are disallowed from sale as a bug repellent, even though there is clear proof that they’ll do the job as one. They don’t hold the effective strength of an chemical like insect repellent choices, and they should be used on a regular basis. However, they do give you benefits.

There won’t be any such constraints with the selling of chemical-based solutions, showing that the European authorities looks at these to be fully risk-free, and that the claims of all-natural bug repellent companies are phony. It’s not always truthful, because there happens to be sufficient facts to say harmful results of chemical-based remedies, as well as data that all-natural solutions act as insect repellents. Research the facts and evidence before you make your final decision.

When looking at the potential harmful outcomes of chemical-based bug repellent, keep in mind that the cases of great issues with their use is really small. DEET, for instance, is used by huge numbers of people over the summer months. Seizures, along with other direct negative effects, are so uncommon that the chemical can be viewed as less hazardous than several foods that individuals are sensitive to.

The particular issues with DEET and also other substances originate from lengthy direct exposure. These issues tend to be more intangible compared to a immediate causation of illness. Tests which have been done on employees at National Recreation area facilities spanning an extended period of time demonstrate that there’s a destructive effect of prolonged use. Employees who’re subjected to DEET each day have reduced reaction times, much less psychological clearness, and elevated disruption of sleeping habits. The possible health risks of chemical-based bug repellent cannot be ignored. It is very important now that we begin to evaluate organic insect repellent solutions from an objective point of view, instead of acknowledging that something which isn’t chemical substance based won’t work.

Organic things like citronella oil have been used as an insect repellent for many years, but government authorities have recently decided to forbid their sale for this specific purpose. This really is without any facts to claim they don’t possess the stated characteristics.

In fact, proof firmly implies that these ingredients can and do get rid of bugs. They’re significantly less harmful to work with, however some amount of people do encounter skin frustration with a lot of organic products. It truly is an instance of attempting numerous to determine what you might be best with, and constantly keeping in mind the need to use natural treatments more regularly.

Tips on mosquitoes and how to avoid them in your yard

Summer is well on its way and so are the mosquitoes. This is the time of year that we all love to enjoy time with our family outdoors. Mosquitoes can put a stop to the fun if you don’t take care of them. There are a few things to remember to do to keep mosquitoes to a minimum:

• Do not allow standing water to accumulate for more than two days. Common areas to check: old tires, buckets, unused plastic swimming pools, the base of a flower pot, pet dishes, plastic covers or any container that may collect water.

• Change the water in birdbaths, fountains and wading pools at least once a week.

• Clean debris from rain gutters and remove standing water under or around structures.

• you have a flat roof, check for standing water several days after a rain.

• Check rain barrels for mosquito larvae. A tight cover will prevent egg laying. A thin layer of oil will kill mosquitoes already present.

• If you have a pond, birdbath or other water feature on your property, try Mosquito Control Rings containing Bt ‘Israelensis,’ a naturally occurring bacterium that kills mosquito larvae. They can be used in ponds, water barrels, birdbaths and water gardens and everywhere the insects breed. It is not harmful to birds or other wildlife.

• Repair leaks or clear away puddles from around faucets and window air conditioning units.

• Stock ornamental pools with minnows or goldfish (they eat mosquito larvae on the water surface) or treat the pools with biological larvicides (chemicals or natural bacteria that can be used to kill mosquito larvae).

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT ANTS

1 Like all insects, ants have six legs. Each leg has three joints. The legs of the ant are very strong so they can run very quickly. If a man could run as fast for his size as an ant can, he could run as fast as a racehorse. Ants can lift 20 times their own body weight. An ant brain has about 250 000 brain cells. A human brain has 10,000 million so a colony of 40,000 ants has collectively the same size brain as a human.
2 The average life expectancy of an ant is 45-60 days. Ants use their antenae not only for touch, but also for their sense of smell. The head of the ant has a pair of large, strong jaws. The jaws open and shut sideways like a pair of scissors. Adult ants cannot chew and swallow solid food. Instead they swallow the juice which they squeeze from pieces of food. They throw away the dry part that is left over. The ant has two eyes, each eye is made of many smaller eyes.
3 They are called compound eyes. The abdomen of the ant contains two stomachs. One stomach holds the food for itself and second stomach is for food to be shared with other ants. Like all insects, the outside of their body is covered with a hard armour this is called the exoskeleton. Ants have four distinct growing stages, the egg, larva, pupa and the adult. Biologists classify ants as a special group of wasps. (Hymenoptera Formicidae) There are over 10000 known species of ants. Each ant colony has at least one or more queens.
4 The job of the queen is to lay eggs which the worker ants look after. Worker ants are sterile, they look for food, look after the young, and defend the nest from unwanted visitors. Ants are clean and tidy insects. Some worker ants are given the job of taking the rubbish from the nest and putting it outside in a special rubbish dump! Each colony of ants has its own smell. In this way, intruders can be recognized immediately. Many ants such as the common Red species have a sting which they use to defend their nest.
5 The common Black Ants and Wood Ants have no sting, but they can squirt a spray of formic acid. Some birds put ants in their feathers because the ants squirt formic acid which gets rid of the parasites. The Slave-Maker Ant (Polyergus Rufescens) raids the nests of other ants and steals their pupae. When these new ants hatch, they work as slaves within the colony. The worker ants keep the eggs and larvae in different groups according to ages.
6 At night the worker ants move the eggs and larvae deep into the nest to protect them from the cold. During the daytime, the worker ants move the eggs and larvae of the colony to the top of the nest so that they can be warmer. If a worker ant has found a good source for food, it leaves a trail of scent so that the other ants in the colony can find the food. Army Ants are nomadic and they are always moving. They carry their larvae and their eggs with them in a long column.
7 The Army Ant (Ecitron Burchelli) of South America, can have as many as 700,000 members in its colony. The Leaf Cutter Ants are farmers. They cut out pieces of leaves which they take back to their nests. They chew them into a pulp and a special fungus grows it. Ants cannot digest leaves because they cannot digest cellulose. Many people think ants are a pest but I like them. To stop them coming into my kitchen I put some sugar outside. They they have so much to eat that they are not interested in coming into my kitchen.
